The mormon crickets swarm the landscape of the American West. When they dehydrate, are low on salt, and protein, the weakest of the swarm are cannibalized by the stronger ones.

Kind of like the ancient triops. We hatch a passel of these beasties every now and then. They live for about three months. When one of them dies, the others eat it. So there are fewer carcasses to clean up!
This sounds horrible, but they aren't the kind of creature you become attached to. They're fun to watch, though.
